Key Ingredients for Healthy Skin

Ever wondered what ingredients are healthy for your skin? With all the different brands and products out there, it's important to remember what key ingredients you should look for in your skincare routine and, more importantly, what ingredients should not be in your skin products!

As a Dermaceutical brand we focus on ingredients that are natural, non-inflammatory and are backed by science, here are a few of the ingredients we look for in skincare products:

Betaine - a powerful ingredient that helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles and results in smoother skin. A stable and non-toxic natural substance, Betaine has become the subject of many studies for its anti-inflammatory properties. When used in skincare products, Betaine helps to improve water retention which can reduce signs of aging while also calming irritated skin.

Niacidamine a is form of Vitamin B3 and its enriching properties do wonders to support healthy skin! Niacidamine helps build keratin in your skin cells which keeps your skin firm, healthy, and minimises redness. This ingredient can also help combat acne by regulating oil produced on the skin.

Glucosamine – is a natural compound in the body that helps maintain the health of your cartilage. When used in skincare products, glucosamine accelerates acne scar healing, improves skin hydration, and decreases wrinkles. What more can you want?

Licorice Root - is derived from the licorice plant called Glycyrrhiza. The main reason we love this particular ingredient is because it helps brighten the skin! Licorice Root contains anti-inflammatory properties that help those with irritated skin. It is made up of flavonoid which is rich in antioxidants and can reduce redness, itching, or irritation. Jojoba esters- are created from the Jojoba plant and are often used in skincare products due to their high oxidative stability and the extraordinary similarity to the natural oils produced by human skin. In skincare, jojoba esters have high nourishing properties which help keep skin hydrated hydrated and reduce dryness and irritation that comes from flaky and agitated skin. The oil produced by Jojoba esters can help prevent acne or other growths of bacteria. It's extremely gentle and lightweight which makes it a perfect compliment when used in a scrub or exfoliator.

These are just a few of our many favourite ingredients, many of which can be found in our incredible Koéna skincare range! Our skin is the largest organ of the body and its primary function is a protection barrier – protecting the body from external factors such as bacteria, chemicals and extreme temperature. As such, it’s so important to make sure that the ingredients you’re using for your skincare help protect the skin barrier, not compromise it.
