Find the Win for Your Skin

Are you getting frustrated with your current skincare products? Do you feel like your skin isn't getting any better despite the different remedies you’ve deployed to correct dryness or red inflamed skin? Maybe it’s time to take a step back and look at what your skin type is and what products are best for your skin. Everyone's skin is different and there is simply no “one size fits all” solution to radiant hydrated skin all year round.

Navigating the sea of skincare products out there can be a little daunting; what do you look for – the right dermatological advice? The right ingredients? Making sure none of the “bad stuff” is in the fine print? Looking to our favorite celebrities for brand endorsement? The decision-process is complex to say the least, and that’s without targeting your specific skincare needs.

The main indicators for diagnosing skin types are whether your skin is predominantly oily, dry, normal, combination, or sensitive. If your skin tends to be on the oily side, this means you create more sebum causing the skin to look greasy and shiny. If you have dry skin this is the exact opposite so your skin may be predisposed to dryness and potential flaking. Since both are on two different ends of the spectrum it's important to know what is best for each type of skin!

For oily skin you need lightweight hydration that still helps lock in moisture but doesn’t cause the skin to produce more sebum than it already has. According to Masterclass, using an oil free, foaming gentle cleanser can help regularly cleanse the skin without stripping away the natural oils. (psst. check out our amazing gentle daily cleanser that does exactly that!) For dry skin you want some supercharged moisturising that can help keep the skin hydrated all day, and, a little sage advice from a fellow dry skin battler, make sure the lotion you are using has no fragrance as this has a tendency to dry the skin out even more. The key is to moisturise often for dry skin- that means every time you wash your face (even after you step out of the shower!).

Quick skincare tip, make sure to apply your favourite cream or lotion while the skin is still damp to help seal in moisture!

Once you’ve locked in your skin type it’s time to focus on the breakouts. Depending on how often you get acne, it could actually be symptomatic of the skincare products you are using. According to Advanced Skin Therapuetics, “Age, environment, lifestyle, and health can render your old routine more damaging than helpful, so knowing when to call it quits with a particular treatment or formula is key to providing your skin with exactly what it needs.” Wondering when it might be time to call an end to your current routine? Breakouts, irritation, itchiness, and discolouration are all signs it might be time to reevaluate what you're using and ditch your current skincare products. Another one to point fingers to (which we would all rather put in the bottom drawer and forget about it!) is your diet. Check out our blog on foods to avoid to see if maybe your favourite snack is the source of some of those pimples!
